What are the best ways to deal with spots and acne?

Keep your skin scrupulously clean, but please be gentle with it!  Do not scrub and do not be tempted to use harsh products that dry out the skin.  These will only make your skin produce more sebum to counteract the dryness, thus making the problems worse. A gentle cleansing routine will be more effective.

It is also important to avoid washing your face with your fingers: you might have bacteria under your nails that can spread to your face. So, along with our Purifying Cleanser we recommend using a cleansing face brush.  They are fantastic, but if you don’t want to invest in a cleansing brush, you can use a muslin cloth or cotton flannel, just make sure you use a clean one each time you cleanse. As well as being more hygienic, these will also provide gentle exfoliation to your skin, removing dead skin cells.

Using a toner after cleansing removes any traces of cleanser. Some toners are especially designed for acne-prone skin, like our Clarifying Toner which contains witch hazel, tea tree and lavender to soothe and heal inflamed skin and to balance oiliness. A quick sweep over the skin with a cotton pad sprayed with toner is also a great way to refresh oily skin in the middle of the day, when a full cleansing routine would be impractical.

After cleansing and toning, we recommend applying a treatment product all over the affected area. For example, if your breakouts are only on your chin, put a thin layer of  product all over your chin area. Avoid putting the product just on individual spots because that way you’re not treating the acne, you’re just treating the spot and the acne will reappear in a different place. A thin layer over the whole area is best. We recommend our Treatment Gel for acne prone skin, which contains Willow Bark, a natural source of Salicylic acid. Its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties  are very powerful and important for acne treatment. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores by dissolving the ‘cement’ that holds sticky cells together in the clogged pores. It also contains Aloe Vera to soothe inflammation and heal spots and tea tree for its antiseptic properties.

For those of you with adult acne, we would recommend using our Rejuvenating Serum after cleansing and toning. Despite being an oil, it is beneficial for acne prone skin as its sebum balancing action makes the skin less oily. It is easily absorbed and will not leave your skin feeling greasy. It contains high levels of rosehip oil, which is rich in the natural form of retinol (vitamin A) which is good for acne-prone skin.
