Commonly known as Marigold, calendula is sometimes called the ‘queen of flowers’ due to its amazing properties. The antibacterial and immune-stimulant properties of the plant make it extremely useful in treating slow-healing cuts and cuts in people who have compromised immune systems. The herb stimulates the production of collagen at wound sites and minimizes scarring. With such strong regenerative and protective capabilities, calendula plays a key role in many of our products.
Soothes skin rashes (including eczema), minor burns and sunburn. Used as a lotion or added in oil form to a cool bath, chamomile may ease the itching of eczema and other rashes and reduces skin inflammation. It may also speed healing and prevent bacterial infection. It is healing for sore lips. The plant’s healing properties come from its daisy-like flowers, which contain volatile oils (including bisabolol, bisabolol oxides A and B, and matricin) as well as flavonoids (particularly a compound called apigenin) and other therapeutic substances.
This little herb is a great skin rejuvenator. Chickweed is excellent for the skin both internally as a demulcent and externally as an emollient. It has a cooling and drying effect on wounds and skin eruptions. Minor burns respond nicely to chickweed’s care. The medicinal properties of this common garden weed combined with its nutritional properties make it a popular ingredient in salves and lotions.
The stinging nettle is a fantastic herb with many uses – ranging from the clothes we wear to the skincare we use. You might be a little apprehensive about the idea of using nettles on your skin, but let me assure you that this herb is packed full of skincare goodies… and they won’t sting! Nettle is anti-inflammatory, astringent, bactericidal, healing, mildly deodorant and stimulating. It is high in phenols, which give nettle powerful antioxidant properties and help keep the free radicals under control when used in skincare. Research has also found high anti-microbial activity in nettle extracts (Gülçin, 2004). Nettles have been used in skincare remedies for a long time. In an article from 1854, a Dr. Joseph Buller describes replacing the use of liquor arsenicalis (essentially a poisonous ‘medicine’ used in the 1800s to ‘cure’ all sorts of ailments) with nettle decoction or extract. Virtually all of his patients were cured of their chronic skin diseases, despite the fact that – in his words – this knowledge was passed down by “the class of peasantry usually termed ‘old women’”.
