If the thought of putting oils on your face brings really bad breakouts to mind, think again. Ancient Egyptians kept their skin vibrant and flawless with Oils like Sesame and Olive. In fact these were so precious that labour was sometimes paid for with oils rather than coin. And this (very) old-school beauty secret is making a pretty big comeback right now. In fact, according to top dermatologists, facial oils may be that missing step in your beauty routine.
Beware, though, some oils can be irritant. Avoid those that are mineral oils and paraffin-based. These are thought to clog the pores and be possible irritants. Make sure you choose natural vegetable and plant oils. We only use these and all of ours are cold-pressed and mostly organic too.
The oils that we use are packed with anti-oxidants so really can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and fight against ageing and pollution. They also contain a large element of what are called ‘dry’ oils, which means they absorb quickly into the skin and do not leave a greasy, shiny residue. We use higher-end oils such as macadamia, sea-buckthorn and camelina that actually pull out grime and fats from pores, making them appear smaller and so less noticeable.
Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturising goodness in, while keeping toxins and other bad stuff out. Oils are the ideal antidote to dry, flaky skin and rough, rosy cheeks. Some oils also help to fortify and strengthen our own natural skin barrier. This is especially important for big city dwellers who need extra protection against pollutants and smog, a known source of unwanted wrinkles. On a cold winter day, using a product with rosehip seed oil, like our Rejuvenating Serum, which is highly concentrated with antioxidant ingredients, would be a definite win-win. This serum is also good for open pores, oily and dry skin alike due to it’s amazing sebum balancing properties. It can be used under your natural mineral make-up or daily moisturiser.
