What should I look for to be sure a product is genuinely organic?

Firstly, look for organic certification. Unfortunately, in the UK and many other countries there are no regulations about the way manufacturers can label their products with the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’.  This means a product may have only 1% organic ingredients and be laden with synthetic chemicals and preservatives but still have an organic label on it.

So, always read the label and the ingredients.  If you are unable to make out the ingredients then ask the manufacturer for their help.  All ingredients by EC cosmetic law have to be labelled with their ‘INCI’ names (often but not always these are their Latin names).  Thus, something as simple as sunflower oil becomes ‘Helianthus annuus’.  We used to put the English translations on all our packaging.  However, since we no longer use boxes to save on packaging, we no longer have the room to do this. However, both INCI names and common names are listed on our website for ease.

So read the label carefully, look for an organic certification symbol and when in doubt contact the manufacturer for clarification. There are several different organic certification bodies to choose from in the UK.  Beyond Organic skincare is certified organic with O F & G (Organic Farmers & Growers), who certify more organic land in the UK than any other organic certifying body.
