What should I look for to be sure a product is genuinely organic?

What should I look for to be sure a product is genuinely organic?

Firstly, look for organic certification. Unfortunately, in the UK and many other countries there are no regulations about the way manufacturers can label their products with the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’.  This means a product may have only 1% organic ingredients and be laden with harmful chemicals and preservatives but still have an organic label on it.

So, ALWAYS read the label and the ingredients.  If you are unable to make out the ingredients then ask the shop for their help.  All ingredients by EC cosmetic law have to be labelled with their ‘INCI’ names, which are really their Latin names.  Thus, something as simple as sunflower oil becomes ‘Helianthus annuus’.  We used to put the English translations on all our packaging.  However, since we no longer use boxes to save on packaging, we no longer have the room to do this.

So read the label carefully, look for the organic certification symbol and when in doubt ask the shop-keeper, or if shopping on line, phone or email the manufacturer.

Beyond Organic skincare is certified organic with O F & G (Organic Farmers & Growers), who certify more organic land in the UK than any other organic certifying body.
